Packing
Boxes – The “How To” Guide
ARRANGE TO HAVE ALL PACKING MATERIAL READY TO GO BEFORE
THE MOVE DATE
Purchase all your necessities so they are ready to
go on the big day. Any and all moving supplies such
as boxes, tape and packaging material can be bought
through us. If you are looking to save money, contacting
close friends who might have recently moved is a good
idea.
CHOOSE
THE CORRECT SIZE OF BOX
Items that tend to be heavy should be packaged in
smaller boxes. Remember, no container should be in
excess of 50lbs.
NOT
ALL MATERIALS NEED TO BE PACKED FOR LOCAL MOVES
During a local move, items such as large framed pictures
or photos, wall mirrors, and beds aren’t required
to be packaged. These things can normally be safely
transported short distances without excessive packaging.
Simply wrapping them with a towel or blanket is usually
sufficient.
TAKE
IT ONE ROOM AT A TIME, ONE DAY AT A TIME
Packing an entire home tends be a very stressful task.
By packing your belongings one room at a time, the
overall job is broken down into smaller jobs. Do one
or two rooms one day, then save the rest for the next
day. Packing up everything in the same day can cause
unnecessary stress. Plan ahead and give yourself a
few days to get the entire job done. Moving shouldn’t
be a rushed task.
CAREFULLY
SECURE THE BOTTOM’S OF ALL BOXES
The last thing you want or need is to have a box come
open during the moving process. Taking the time to
ensure all boxes are properly secured will save you
time and stress once the move has begun.
PAPER
IS YOUR FRIEND
All items that can be classified as “breakable”
need to be individually wrapped with either paper
or packing wrap (bubble wrap). In addition to wrapping
each item, make sure the container in which it is
stored is carefully lined with a thick layer of protection
as well.
LABELING
Using a permanent black sharpie (or similar) to identify
contents of a containers as well as the destination
room is a good practice. Make sure EACH SIDE is properly
labeled. Labeling only one or two sides could make
it more difficult when it comes to unpacking the truck.
Also, any items that need to be packed in a specific
position should be labeled as such.
MAKE
SURE ALL BOXES ARE PACKED PROPERLY –
DO NOT OVERFILL
It is important that all containers close properly
in order to stack efficiently on the moving vehicle.
If there are items bulging out, it makes it very difficult
to stack on top of it. On the other hand, if a box
is under filled, there is a possibility that it could
be crushed by the boxes stacked on top of it. Any
open spaces should be filled with packaging wrap or
similar to compensate the empty space.
ALL
FULLY-FILLED CONTAINERS SHOULD BE SEALED PROPERLY
Once all containers are completely packed and ready
to be moved, tightly seal each container. By taking
the time to do this, the odds of damages occurring
will be greatly reduced.
STACKING
CONTAINERS
Stack containers that are similar in size. It’s
important to know that any stack should not be higher
than 5 feet in height.
REMEMBER:
ALWAYS STACK HEAVY TO LIGHT
And lastly, this one is fairly self explanatory! Heavy
goes on the bottom, light goes on the top!
